The Family Birthing Center has 4 beds for labor and delivery and 8
beds for mother-baby care. Patient ratios are 1:2 for labor and
delivery and 1:4 for mother-baby care. The facility performs
approximately 45 deliveries per month, including standard term and
preterm deliveries. High-risk cases are transferred out, with
newborns receiving IV antibiotics and/or short-term oxygen if
needed. There are two registered nurses and one respiratory
therapist present during every delivery. The nurses participate in
a unit-based orientation consisting of 2-3 days on the floor with a
preceptor. Common diagnoses include standard labor, delivery, and
gynecological patients. Nurses will rotate holiday shifts and are
expected to work every other weekend. Report is conducted at the
bedside, and schedules are posted six weeks in advance. Travelers
have the capability to access their schedules from home and manage
availability for extra shifts. There is no self-scheduling, and
block scheduling is generally not available. The unit operates
without a nurse aide, and the charge nurse typically does not take
patients but may assist with break relief. Emergency and anesthesia
coverages are on-call at night. All staff are required to have BLS,
ACLS, NRP certification, and Advanced Fetal Monitoring knowledge.
Nurses should have experience managing routine deliveries and be
comfortable in a high-pressure environment with minimal resources
available during night shifts.
